Z hlediska rytmického se skotské tance dělí na reely, jigy a strathspeye. Hudební doprovod vytváří hudební skupina složená obvykle z houslí, akordeonu, flétny, piana a basy, jen v případě highland tanců bývají nejčastějším doprovodným nástrojem skotské dudy. Jak u ceilidh, tak i u country tanců se jedná o tance živé, které si můžete zatancovat nejen ve Skotsku, ale kdekoliv po světě, při skotských společenských událostech jako jsou plesy, svatby, taneční zábavy.&lt;br /&gt;Neopominutelnou zásluhu na tomto dnešním rozšíření skotských tanců má RSCDS, která byla již v roce 1923 v Glasgově založena jako Scottish Country Dance Society (později po převzetí patronátu samotnou královnou v roce 1954 se do názvu dostává i slovo Royal) a která se začala zabývat sbíráním a uchováním tradičních skotských tanců. K naplnění tohoto cíle společnost rekonstruuje řadu tanců uchovaných ve starých rukopisech, sebrané tance zveřejňuje ve svých publikacích, standardizuje technické požadavky na provádění kroků a tanečních figur. Po počátečním sdružování v rámci britských ostrovů se celá společnost internacionalizuje, čehož důsledkem je např. fakt, že stejné tance si lze zatancovat ve Skotsku, stejně jako v Japonsku. V současné době má celá společnost (se sídlem v Edinburghu) více než 25.000 členů organizovaných ve skupinách, tzv. &amp;quot;branches&amp;quot; v mnoha zemích světa. Společnost vychovává a certifikuje učitele skotských tanců, vydává audio nahrávky s taneční hudbou a video nahrávky, na kterých jsou zachyceny nejznámější tance. V neposlední řadě organizuje bohatý společenský život, plesy, setkání, workshopy aj.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Ceilidh tance&lt;/h2&gt;Ceilidh je slovo z jazyka gaelic a významově se pod ním skrývá sešlost lidí, kteří spontánně zpívají, vyprávějí, tancují, muzicírují, a to obvykle v soukromém domě. Postupem doby s vývojem společnosti se upravil význam tohoto slova a ceilidh dancing je dnes chápáno spíše jako záležitost párového tancování oproti country dancing, kde jde o tance setů, které se skládají z párů.  A tak ceilidh tance jsou charakteristické nejen tím, že základní taneční jednotkou je pár, ale jsou určeny pro libovolný počet párů, základní formací bývá kruh okolo celé taneční místnosti, složitost tanců není příliš velká, dochází ke střídání partnerů atd.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Skotské country tance&lt;/h2&gt;Skotské country tance jsou moderní formou tanců, které byly populární v Anglii a Skotsku v 18. století. Jejich původ lze najít ve francouzských čtverylkách, které ovlivnily společenský tanec po celé Evropě a postupem civilizačního vývoje i v Americe. Staly se oblíbenými zejména mezi obyvateli velkých měst a v průběhu 19. a 20. století se postupně rozšířily po celém Skotsku. Zde ovlivňují skotské tance v té době moderní tance jako waltz, one-step atd. Součástí country tanců se stávají i různé prvky highland dancing, tanců horalů ze skotské Vysočiny. Country tance se tancují ve skupinách většinou tří až pěti párů, které tvoří taneční set. Set bývá nejčastěji řadový, kde jednu řadu tvoří tanečnice a druhou proti nim stojící tanečníci, dále pak čtvercový, kde každý pár stojí na jedné straně čtverce, či výjimečně trojúhelníkový. V tancích se většinou kombinují sólové figury prvního páru s pohyby ostatních tanečních párů a lze tak vytvořit nespočetné množství kombinací. Základem pro skotské country tance je asi dvanáct tanečních figur, jejichž osvojení umožňuje zvládnout velkou většinu těchto tanců. Řada tanců však obsahuje své vlastní pohybové variace a taneční formace, díky nimž se tance stávají zvláštními, unikátními a mnohdy ještě zábavnějšími. K provádění skotských tanců je vhodné zvládnout i zvláštní krokovou techniku, kde je kladen důraz na celkovou přesnost a vytříbenost provedení. Je registrováno cca 7.000 různých skotských country tanců, z čehož okolo 1000 tanců patří k těm trvale tancovaným, které nemají jen lokální význam. Mnoho tanců pochází z tradičních zdrojů, jakými jsou staré rukopisy a tištěné sbírky tanců, ale mnoho jich také bylo vytvořeno teprve v nedávné době. Právě spojení staré taneční kultury s moderními prvky vytváří to, co je na skotských country tancích přitažlivé. Skotské tance provází i celá etiketa, související s tím, že tyto tance jsou velmi společenské (úsměv a oční kontakt s tanečním partnerem jsou téměř povinností) a vytvářejí příležitosti k odpočinkovému flirtování. Taneční akce mají svůj řád, pořadí jednotlivých tanců je známo předem.</description>

      <title>Scottish Dances</title>

They are danced by groups of three, four or five couples who form a so-called set. The most common sets are longwise sets where the dancers stand adjacent to each other in two parallel lines, with the men facing the ladies, and square sets where each of the four couples stands on one side of the square. Most dances comprise a combination of solo formations danced by the first couple and formations danced by the first couple together with the other dancers. The arrangement of these formations in a different sequence for each dance leads to numerous combinations. There are approximately 7000 different dances, of which about 1000 are danced frequently in Scotland and beyond. Many dances come from historical sources such as manuscripts and printed collections of dances, but many have also been composed more recently. It is this combination of a historical dancing tradition and modern elements which make Scottish country dances so appealing. &lt;p&gt;There are approximately twelve basic dance formations which, once mastered, should enable the dancer to dance almost any of the dances. However, many of the dances contain their own particular variations which make each dance different, unique and fun. To dance Scottish country dances properly one also has to master particular dance steps which require precision and refinement.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;In terms of music and rhythm, Scottish country dances can be divided into reels, jigs and strathspeys. The instruments most often used to accompany dancers are the violin, accordion, flute, piano and double bass. An integral part of these dances is dance etiquette, which stems from the fact that the social character of Scottish country dancing is very important (smiling and eye contact with other dancers are almost obligatory) and the dances even provide an opportunity for playful flirtation. Dance events have a particular set of rules, the dances and the order in which they are to be danced are often known in advance.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Country dances began to be danced in Scotland in the 18th century and their origins can be traced back to French quadrilles, which influenced social dancing throughout Europe and, later, in America too. They were particularly popular among the inhabitants of large towns and cities and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries they spread throughout the whole of Scotland. At this time Scottish dances were influenced by new dances such as the waltz, polka, one-step and others. Elements of Highland dancing were also incorporated into country dancing. In 1923, the Scottish Country Dance Society (from 1954, the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society) was founded in Glasgow and began collecting and preserving Scottish country dances. The RSCDS achieved this by transcribing dances from old manuscripts, publishing these dances and setting standards for the technical requirements of steps and formations. In addition to this the RSCDS also trains teachers of Scottish country dancing, produces its own audio recordings with dance music and video cassettes with examples of the most popular dances as well as organising a large number of events including balls, courses and workshops. The RSCDS has grown into a large international organisation with 25000 members in branches worldwide from Canada to Japan.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;It is worth mentioning so-called Ceilidh dances. Ceilidh is the Gaelic word for a gathering at which spontaneous singing, verse, dancing and music takes place, usually in a person&amp;#39;s house. However, there is very little connection between today&amp;#39;s &amp;#39;ceilidh&amp;#39; dancing and the original meaning of the word. Ceilidh dancing today usually refers to couple dancing as opposed to country dancing in sets of couples.
